               PROJECTS COMPLETED

 PROJECT TITLE:  STAFF QUARTERS

We had 7 people (including Janine and Andrew) living permanently at Kep Gardens.  We were all housed in 3 rudimentary buildings which also served as our schoolroom, kitchen area, library, tool room and implement shed.  When visitors arrived to stay it was difficult to provide any fixed areas for accommodation.  This initial staff quarters provides permanent accommodation for 8 employees, freeing up the tool room and implement shed to provide badly needed storage areas which can also be used for temporary accommodation if and when required.

This building, which was the first major housing construction, was the learning process with regard to availability of materials, suitable and competent labour and a guide to overall building costs, techniques and alternatives.

PROJECT TITLE:  KITCHEN

Our boat, MV Kep Gardens offers lunch cruises and dinner cruises if requested and snacks on our shorter cruises.  We built a kitchen to provide clean and hygienic conditions to prepare these meals.  Two staff were trained to cook the European style buffet meals.

PROJECT TITLE: DAM REHABILITATION (PHASE 1)

The dam was constructed approximately 3 years ago and is our primary source of water.  It is 50 metres square and 3.5 metres deep at the centre point.  The dam is constructed in the path of a natural waterway, feeding from the nearby mountains during the rainy season (May to October).

Originally the waterway only provided supply to the neighbouring rice paddies but we included an additional diversion in the initial construction to provide a supply to the local villagers.

PROJECT TITLE:  CHICKEN FARM

Chickens are a major part of the local diet and quality birds and eggs are always in demand during the holiday periods which coincide with a large tourist influx.  Supply is outstripped by demand and prices increase handsomely.

Our chicken farm provides a coop and run to cater for an initial breeding flock of 30 birds, increasing to a maximum capacity of 150 birds.  We have our initial breeding stock plus 56 chicks at present and also 4 geese that act as watchdogs over the chicken flock.  We also have 3 goslings that are gorgeous!
